Ozone layer depletion
Ozone layer depletion –
Elemental oxygen is generally found in its original form as a diatomic molecule.
However, molecules containing three atoms of oxygen are also found in the upper part of the atmosphere.
Its formula is and it is called ozone. Unlike the normal diatomic molecule of oxygen, ozone is toxic.
We are fortunate that ozone does not remain stable near the Earth’s surface.
It absorbs harmful radiations coming from the sun.
In this way it prevents those harmful radiations from reaching the earth’s surface which can harm many life forms.
Recently it was revealed that the ozone layer is being depleted.
Various types of compounds made by humans such as chloro-fluoro carbon (CFC) become present in the atmosphere in a stable state.
(CFC) are carbon compounds containing chlorine and fluorine.
These are very stable and do not decompose even by any biological process. Once they reach the ozone layer, they react with ozone molecules.
This has resulted in depletion of the ozone layer and recently a hole was found in the ozone layer over Antarctica.
It is difficult to imagine the effects that further depletion of the ozone layer will have on life on Earth.
Therefore, in the opinion of many people, efforts are necessary to stop the process of depletion of the ozone layer.
